Those traveling on planes, trains and other types of mass transit should take into account the limitations on luggage that may be applicable to them. This will limit what you can get away with as a carry on and what you can get away with stowing.
In the US, the FAA and TSA have some basic guidelines for what is allowed to be carried on and checked at airports. From these guidelines, each airline sets and enforces it's own standards within the confines of these federal regulations. These limits differ greatly among the various airlines.
Many airlines allow for a maximum of 45 inches (114cm) of the length, width and height of a carry-on bag added together. This can be checked by making sure that a bag can fit into a box measuring 22" x 14" x 9" (55.5 x 35.5 x 22.5cm). Most do not enforce weight limits, but some do.
In general, you are allowed to have one carry-on luggage, one personal item and a coat and hat. Since additional items can be carried on with your carryon, you may be able to remove these from your pack and stuff a little more into your bag.
